News: UWF Students Place in Marketing Contest

University of West Florida Emerald Coast students placed second and were awarded $1,500 in the Chevy College Marketing Challenge held Dec. 12 and 13 in Detroit, Mich. The UWF team was one of five finalist teams that competed to develop an integrated marking communications plan about Chevrolets fuel saving technologies to reach 18 to 30 year-old buyers. Composed of students from the Integrated Marketing communications course, the team included Rafael Gomez, LeighAnn Kinkead, Andrea McMahon, Okeye Mitchell and Kristen Parden.

 The students and their faculty sponsor, Susan Shaw, were flown, all expenses paid to Detroit, Mich. to present their marketing plan to top executives from Chevrolet, Campbell-Ewald (Chevrolets advertising agency) and McGinn MS&L (Chevrolets public relations firm). Students presented a variety of ideas for the campaign including mocked-up Web sites, suggestions for viral marketing techniques through online sharing sites, as well as suggestions for partnerships with other corporations. The teams competed for a chance to have their material become part of an integrated Chevrolet campaign, as well as for prize money and potential internships with Chevrolet, Campbell-Ewald or McGinn MS&L.


The finalist teams were selected from submissions of undergraduate and graduate students from colleges and universities across the country. The UWF team competed against four other schools that included students from Fairfield University, Kings College, University of North Carolina, Greensboro and Drexel University.
