“A lot of out backers were friends and family,” said East Hill Honey owner and beekeeper, Thomas Van Horn. “They shared the Kickstarter page. We owe our success to their work and efforts.”
After the backer’s incentives are fulfilled, the money raised will go to beekeeping equipment, creating new apiaries and supporting the local and urban bee population throughout Pensacola and Northwest Florida.
Right now, East Hill Honey Co. has 20 hives. Van Horn is hoping to increase the hives to 100. According to the Kickstarter page, the cost to set up a single hive is $200. Besides raising money, Van Horn also wanted to spread the word of East Hill Honey, which he succeeded in as well.
“It’s very encouraging,” he said. “Beyond raising our goal we’ve build relationships with so many people.”
Although the Kickstarter project was tiring, Van Horn said he would use the website again when the need arises.
“It’s a lot of work, but a great platform,” he said. “I’m grateful for the generosity in the community. I fee very fortunate.”
