The Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts at Pensacola State College will open its 2012-2013 season with “Rituals”, the newest work by Pensacola photographer Mark Alan Francis on Monday, August 20, at the Visual Arts Gallery.
The reception is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 23.
An associate professor of photography at Pensacola State College, Francis traveled the United States on weekends to eclectic community festivals to capture the 51 color-saturated prints that compose “Rituals”. “I targeted events with unique characters, colors and performers at heart,” Francis said. The events include Pensacola’s own Blue Angels Homecoming Show, San Francisco’s “Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race” and Abbeville, Louisiana’s “5,000 Egg Giant Omelet Celebration”, to name a few of the events Francis photographed.
Francis completed his three-year photographic project as a result of a Switzer Endowed Teaching Chair grant from Pensacola State College. Vivian Spencer, Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts Gallery Director, describes “Rituals” as “an exciting and visionary project.”
“The Switzer Endowed Teaching Chair grants not only help teachers expand as artists, it impacts the classroom experience for the students, which is the whole idea behind the endowments,” Spencer said.
The Visual Arts Gallery is in Building 15 on Pensacola State College’s main campus. The gallery hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.
