Small Business Saturday

By Hana Frenette

Everyone’s heard of Black Friday. It’s the day American’s unite in mass to form lines outside malls, Targets and Wal-Marts, ready to trample each other for $20 off an Xbox 360. Countless hours are spent waiting, fighting, and scavenging for deals alongside disgruntled shoppers.

If you’re looking to get into the Christmas shopping spirit soon after Thanksgiving, but don’t want to risk your life or your sanity on Black Friday, check out Small Business Saturday.

It’s the Saturday after Black Friday, and also right before Cyber Monday—the Internet deal saving shopping day. It was started by American Express in order to help bring traffic to smaller businesses during the surge of Christmas-time purchasing.  But you don’t have to have an American Express card, or even shop at a store that accepts them, to be a part of the sales. Just stop in your favorite local shop and ask them if they have anything special going on that day.  For example, one of our favorites retail spots Urban Objects is getting into the spirit by offering sale prices on lighting samples and sample furniture.

Support local businesses and proudly give gifts that don’t require a 3 a.m. alarm or a tug of war battle.
