FLIP FLOP FLING 6 p.m. The American Red Cross of Northwest Florida will hold its largest fundraising event of the year, the Flip Flop Fling, at the Pensacola Country Club.  The luau-themed evening will feature a shrimp boil style buffet specially created by nationally renowned chef, Jack McNulty, entertainment by the PensaCola Island Steel Drum Band, silent auction, networking, and good times with good friends.  Proceeds raised will benefit the local chapter’s programs and services including disaster relief and education, health and safety training, and services to the military and their families. STROKE AWARENESS DAY 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. In recognition of National Stroke Awareness Month, West Florida Healthcare is offering a free “Stroke Awareness Day” program. This unique community education opportunity will be presented by three physicians who are specialists in diagnosing and treating stroke.  The topics they will cover include “Stroke is Preventable” with Keena Risola, D.O., Neurology, “Stroke is Treatable” with Patricia Manhire, D.O., Emergency Medicine, and “Stroke is Beatable” with Glennal Verbois, M.D., Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. During their presentations, the physicians will discuss how to identify signs and symptoms of a stroke, risk factor modification, and recommendations for a healthier lifestyle.  In addition, how to activate emergency medical services and the emergency treatment process will also be discussed. 29TH ANNUAL CRAWFISH FESTIVAL 12 p.m.-11 p.m. We “laissez les bon temps rouler” at the Pensacola Crawfish Festival in downtown Pensacola.  The festival is one of the largest crawfish boils in the state and is always held on the beautiful waterfront of Bartram Park. The Pensacola Crawfish Festival will bring a little of the Louisiana bayou right here to Pensacola Bay. There will be a wide range of Cajun fare such as crawfish poboys, crawfish pies, and over 16,000 pounds of boiled crawfish. Daily admission to the 2013 Pensacola Crawfish Festival is $5 for adults, with free admission to children 12 and under. A weekend pass for Friday, Saturday and Sunday is available for $10. 39th ANNUAL FIESTA 10K RUN & 5K RUN/WALK 7:30 a.m. Touted as one of the best point-to-point courses in the country. With an oak tree canopy early on the course to the Confederate War Memorial to the finish line near one of the oldest churches and plazas in the nation, the Fiesta course is fantastic and loaded with history! A NIGHT AT THE RACES 5 p.m. EscaRosa Coalition On the Homeless presents “A Nite at the Races” fundraiser. The exciting evening will kick off with the real Run for the Roses, the Kentucky Derby at 5:00 pm on May 4th,  followed by 8 of our races including 12 horses in each race. “A Nite at the Races” is going to be thoroughbred racing via DVD projection on a large screen.  The races are narrated using the horses’ saddle numbers by a professional race track announcer. The program contains horse numbers and names of entries for each race that the horse “owners” have chosen. Advanced tickets for the evening start at $25 each and include the cost of light hors d’oeuvres and “Funny Money” Tokens for “wagering”.  Parade of Prizes at the end of the evening. Wear your best “Derby” Hat/Outfit for prizes (Best Derby Male, Female and Group).  And a chance to meet Tuffy a real American Quarter Horse.  Tuffy supports education by supporting the teachers who teach and the students who learn. La Costa Latina Newspaper is planning a Cinco de Mayo festival on Palafox Street from Garden to Government Streets where the festivities will end with a fireworks display. Vendors will bring authentic flavors, sights and sounds of Mexico to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and the pride of community. Children’s activities, dance and soccer (futbol) skills contests, face painting, live music, cultural performances and other activities are part of the revelry. Admission to the festival is free. GALVEZ DAY CELEBRATION 9 a.m. Galvez Day will be the central ceremony which links Americas early colonial past to Spains history of exploration and discovery. A free public ceremony hosted by Father Peter McLaughlin and Bishop Gregory Parkes celebrating the significant associations with our visiting Spanish Delegation. This Catholic Church, was canonically established in 1781 in the days following the Battle of Pensacola. The gathering will also be introduced to dozens of Pensacola families who are recognized descendants of the earliest Spanish families and Native American Pensacolians. There will be an additional ceremony at Fort George at 10:15 a.m. Fort George is only two blocks north of the Basilica and was the site of the Battle of Pensacola. In this ceremony, Mayor Campos will lay a commemorative wreath at the base of the Yo Solo bronze bust of General Galvez, a gift from Spain. The public is encouraged to attend.
