Another Summer of Concerts

By Sarah McCartan

A Thursday evening in Pensacola during the summer months wouldn’t feel quite right without watching the sun set while listening to music echoing from downtown’s historic Seville Square.

The longstanding summer concert series—Evenings in Olde Seville Square—was all but dead and buried. Then just as it was being lowered into the ground, non-profit organization Events Pensacola stepped in to save it. With the support of sponsorships, this newly formed group is picking up where the Pensacola Heritage Foundation left off.

Since the announcement of the event’s resurrection, avid supporters have been eagerly waiting. Now, the wait is over. Grab your picnic blankets and lawn chairs, because this week the music returns to the park.

This comeback season of Evenings in Olde Seville Square kicks off Thursday, May 23 with an opening performance by the McGuire’s Pipe Band, immediately followed by the Pensacola Civic Band, who has donated their services as an opening night sponsor.

Executive Director of Events Pensacola, Jehan Clark and the entire Events Pensacola Board will be present for the evening, acting as emcees for the show. Throughout the remainder of the season, they will be bringing in radio personalities and local businesses as guest emcees.

In addition to bringing back crowd favorites, event organizers are eager to welcome new acts into the lineup.

“We will have a wonderful variety of music—some of the classic bands that have always played the concerts, with an injection of some new energetic groups that are very excited to be a part of the events,” said Clark.

This season the series introduces a touring band. The jazzy and bluesy Sarah Mac Band makes a debut performance in the park on June 27. Sarah Mac was recently named No. 14 on The Alternate Root Magazine’s “Top 30 Female Voices Right Now,” listed among female vocalist powerhouses such as
Norah Jones, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss and Grace Potter.

Still, there’s more where that came from. In an effort to heighten the enthusiasm and widespread support for the concert series, Events Pensacola is taking valiant strides to further enhance the experience.

“We plan to have more vendors for our participants to purchase food and beverages from,” said Clark. “We will also have a lot of great Evenings in Olde Seville Square branded merchandise to make the evenings even more enjoyable, while helping to support the events.”

Although sustaining this free event has proven to be quite the labor-intensive task for organizers, the event is also proving to be a labor of love. Thanks to Events Pensacola, there is enough love to keep it going.
