Whether you’re going all out for Memorial Day weekend or debating going out at all, you should do yourself a favor and be at Vinyl Music Hall Friday night for Big Freedia.
Freedia a.k.a. “The Queen Diva” is one of the pioneers of the NOLA bounce scene. If you don’t know what that means, you should probably just come to the show and find out. Bounce really isn’t something you can explain. It’s something you have to see and feel and dance to. And even after that, you still might not “get it” right away.
Here’s what I can tell you about a Freedia show: There will be “azz everywhere, azz everywhere”—literally and figuratively. Even if you want to look away, you aren’t going to be able to. Freedia’s ass and the collective asses of her dancers do things regular asses can’t. You just have to watch them. You might even be a little offended at first, but by the end of the night you’ll probably be trying to make yours “double dribble” too.
Bounce music also favors call and response structure, so come ready to participate. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard the songs, it’s easy to follow along.
Example: When Freeida says “I got that gin in my system,” you say “Somebody’s gonna be my victim.” Simple enough, right? If only bouncing like Freedia was that easy too.
