The Northwest Florida Central Labor Council (CLC) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W., Local Union 676) have volunteered to help the Downtown Improvement Board (DIB) safely install the more than 280 individually lit Holiday decorations that give our downtown the Holiday Spirit that the community has come to anticipate.
“Without the help of the local council, union and Clean & Green, this effort would have been impossible this year. With heavy budget cuts all around neither the City nor the DIB could spare the expertise, manpower and equipment it takes to make this happen,” says DIB Chairman Burney Merrill.
Merrill notes that most people who enjoy the holiday decorations don’t realize the amount of skilled labor and equipment that is required to get them installed safely and in working order, and then to remove and store them. All of this must take place under the watchful eyes of licensed electricians and can be a very expensive process.
“We were concerned again about our ability to accomplish all of this for the 2010 Holidays,” says Merrill, “But when the local Labor Council caught wind of the situation they stepped in and truly saved the day. The DIB is appreciative of the generous offer from the CLC, I.B.E.W and Clean and Green for the complete elimination of the cost for labor for our community’s holiday enjoyment.”
Clean and Green will be assisting with the transport and testing of the decorations again this year to ensure their readiness for the Labor Council to install. NES Rentals is providing the lifts necessary to install the decorations on the Garden Street poles.
Clean and Green and the DIB are seeking volunteers to help with the installation of the decorations on Wednesday, November 10th and Thursday, November 11th. Volunteers are needed to help test the decorations, change bulbs, load, unload, and transport individual decorations. Two shifts will run on Wednesday from 7am – 12pm and 12pm – 5pm. The Thursday shift will begin at 7:30am and run until the decorations are all installed. Please contact Angela at 438-1178 to volunteer. Additional volunteers will be needed to remove the decorations in January.
