Join the Million Challenge  Belk Department Store at Cordova Mall partners with American Diabetes Association to offer free blood glucose screenings and other health assessments.
At the end of 2010, the American Diabetes Association surpassed their goal of inspiring one million Americans to be a part of the American Diabetes Association’s movement to Stop Diabetes®.  To continue this momentum, the Association is asking the public to “Join the Million Challenge” by rallying one million people to take the Diabetes Risk Test and finding out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes beginning on Diabetes Alert Day on March 22, 2011 through April 22, 2011.
The Northwest Florida/South Alabama American Diabetes Association and Belk Department Store at Cordova Mall have partnered together to offer free Blood Glucose and Blood Pressure Screenings on Friday. March 25 from 10 AM to 2 PM and Saturday, March 26 from 10 AM to 4 PM in front of Belf Department Store in Cordova Mall.  Physicians Weight Loss Centers will provide a free detailed weight analysis which includes a total Body Composition Analysis and BMI (Body Mass Index).

Bridges to Circles Families moving out of poverty in need of volunteers! The Bridges to Circles poverty initiative is working with families moving out of poverty toward self-sufficiency 365 days of the year.  The only limit on the number of families that can be helped is the number of community volunteers who commit their time to serve as allies.
Bridges to Circles matches people living in poverty who have a strong desire to improve their lives with allies who provide emotional support and assist with life issues. You can help these families in 2011 by volunteering to serve as an ally!
BRIDGES OUT OF POVERTY training helps people understand the issues of generational poverty and the causes of poverty within Escambia County.  This research has an impact on businesses, social service agencies, individuals, and those seeking to become an ally.
ALLY TRAINING is for people who would like to build an intentional friendship with an individual or family working on his or her plan for becoming self-sufficient.

Pensacola Opera presents Opera for the Entire Family Pensacola Opera will present two free performances of its two educational operas for young audiences, Pinocchio by John Davies and (Your) Opera in a Trunk by David Charles on March 26 & 27, 2011 at the University of West Florida.  Performances will be held in the Music Hall at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at the University of West Florida on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
Pinocchio is an adaptation of the original folk-tale using the music of Donzetti, Mozart, Offenbach and Rossini and is age-appropriate for children in grades K-5. This performance is intended to bring opera to children in a way that they can understand and appreciate. (Your) Opera in a Trunk is an improvisational opera that teaches opera vocabulary and form using suggestions from the audience; it is age-appropriate for children in grades 6+. Both performances are 55 minutes long, with Pinocchio performed first on each day.  Punch and cookies will be served at the intermission.  A question-and-answer session with the cast will follow the final performance of (Your) Opera in a Trunk.

EASTER EGG HUNT AND CARNIVAL Don’t miss all the fun at this year’s Play Pensacola Easter Egg Hunt and Carnival held at the Roger Scott Athletics Complex (2130 Summit Boulevard). CHAIRS FOR CHARITY EVENT Sacred Heart Hospital’s Ladies of Charity organization will conduct its 4th Annual Chairs for Charity Auction and Pass-Along Plants Sale on Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cancer Center. The Cancer Center is located on the Sacred Heart Hospital campus in Pensacola, near the corner of Airport Boulevard and College Parkway.
The public is invited to bid on the chairs during the live auction, and door prizes will be given away during the event. Fifty percent of proceeds will be donated to Sacred Heart Cancer Services. Remaining funds will support Ladies of Charity outreach activities in Northwest Florida. Volunteer auctioneer will be Marty Stanovich.
The group invites local artists and crafters to paint and decorate chairs for the event. Chairs may be painted for indoor or outdoor use and may feature everything from whimsical to sports themes. GENEALOGY DAY Drop in for help with your genealogy on Saturday, April 2 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. In lieu of the regular April meeting, the West Florida Genealogical
Society will hold a special event, Family History Assistance Day, a.k.a. “How to Find Out Who You Are.”
This will be a genealogy help day to assist people who have “brick walls” in their research or just need to know where to begin. Seasoned genealogists will be on site to help with census research, birth, marriage and death records research, genealogy software, genealogy basics, online computer research and using the library’s many and varied genealogy resources. AUTISM WORKSHOPS Pensacola State College and Autism Pensacola Inc. join forces to offer continuing education workshops for parents and professionals. The workshops are April 9 and April 23 at the Pensacola campus. Cost is $45 per workshop.
The incidence of children diagnosed with autism now exceeds 1 in 110, and as the rate increases, so does the need for practical training for parents and others who work with children on the spectrum. After the shock of diagnosis wears off, parents often find themselves in the “What now?” phase.
The workshops are designed to help parents and professionals who work with ASD kids find answers, locate resources, access information and develop a network that makes the road easier to travel.
Dr. Sandra Hastings is the workshop facilitator. She has been a board certified behavior analyst for 17 years. She is a professional educator who has worked in schools, group homes, community and work settings and local agencies as a trainer and a provider of applied behavior analysis. Her experience includes clients with autism and other developmental disabilities from ages 18 months to 62 years old.

GREAT GULFCOAST ARTS FESTIVAL ISSUES CALL FOR ENTRIES The Art Show Committee of the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival is issuing a call to artists for this year’s festival, which will be Nov. 4-6 in Seville Square.
Artists’ applications for the juried fine art show will be available March 15 online at The deadline for submitting an application is May 15. BRIGHT START-RIGHT START ART CLASS Inspire your preschooler’s imagination and self-expression with a world of hands-on art activities. PERDIDO KEY RELAY FOR LIFE The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Perdido Key is just around the corner. Former and current cancer patients, their families, businesses, civic organizations and the public are invited to take part in this exciting team event. Relay for Life takes place at Escambia High school, April 2-3, beginning at 12 p.m.
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s version of an athletic relay, but with a new twist. Relay for Life is a family-oriented event where participants enjoy the camaraderie of a team and also raise funds to support the activities of the American Cancer Society. Participants camp out at the relay site, and when they are not taking their turn walking, they take part in fun activities and enjoy the local entertainment. This year the Mammogram Unit will also be at the site from 12-4 p.m. to help join the fight against cancer.
Teams from companies, churches, organizations, hospitals and schools collect donations and can win individual and team prizes for their efforts.

GROW GREAT TOMATOES A tomato workshop will be held at the Santa Rosa County Extension Office on April 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. Extension Agents Dan Mullins and Theresa Friday will discuss successful ways to grow and care for garden tomatoes in this area. Plant selection, growing methods, conditions and care of plants will be covered. Dr. Johanna Welch will be discussing and demonstrating the technique of “grafting” tomatoes.
Grafting is widely used in horticulture for a variety of reasons. In fruit trees like apple, dwarfing rootstock are used to control the size and vigor of the tree. With field- grown vegetables, grafting is used to increase resistance to soil-borne diseases. Increasingly, tomato growers are using grafting to both decrease susceptibility to root diseases and to increase fruit production through increased plant vigor.
The Santa Rosa County Master Gardeners will have tomato plants for sale. A wide selection will be available including an heirloom variety, disease resistant varieties and small fruited varieties in addition to some proven garden varieties.

Pulitzer-prize winning author Tony Horwitz to speak in Pensacola Pulitzer-prize winning writer Tony Horwitz will speak about history and remembrance and how journalism informs his approach to the past on Saturday, April 9 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Pensacola Little Theatre in downtown Pensacola.  Horwitz’s presentation is in conjunction with the annual meeting of the National Council on Public History. The event is free and open to the public. Conference registration is not required.
Horwitz’s current book project on John Brown and his 1859 raid falls at the intersection of efforts to mark the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War and the 10th  anniversary of 9/11.  Horwitz is the author of several bestselling books, including Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War (1998) and A Voyage Long and Strange: On the Trail of Vikings, Conquistadors, Lost Colonists, and Other Adventurers in Early America (2008). He worked for many years as a reporter, including a decade overseas as correspondent for The Wall Street Journal.

UWF Festival on the Green The University of West Florida announces the 11th Edition of the Festival On the Green, Friday, April 1st and Saturday, April 2nd.  This year’s festival will feature over 20 venues with events such as, Time Portal to the Past, Time Portal to your Future (Including UWF Showcase and Open House at the New Science & Engineering Building), the International Village, NCAA division II Men’s and Women’s events including baseball and softball matches.  We will also have exhibition rugby championship match and a Triathlon (Short course). West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc. reports progress in the preservation of Civil War-era flag West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc. seeks the public’s help in the preservation of a unique piece of local history  and to commemorate the upcoming 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.  The First National Confederate Battle Flag, carried during the Battle of Santa Rosa Island on Oct. 9, 1861, is currently receiving preservation treatments by a textile conservator in New Orleans.
A campaign to raise $13,500 has secured almost $3,000 from generous donors.  Funds raised since November have allowed the conservation process of the 40”x 66” hand-made flag to begin.
“The flag has been wet cleaned and air dried,” said  Lynne Robertson, chief curator. “However, the cotton fabrics comprising the familiar blue background and white stars design were found to be too fragile to be stabilized by stitching.  Instead, tears in the cotton fabric caused by stress and dry rot have been repaired by using a neutral-Ph, heat-activated, adhesive applied to the back of the flag.  Underlay fabrics stitched behind the flag have been dyed to blend with the colors of the flag, filling in holes and replace missing fabric at the fly end. ”
The red bars of the flag are made of thicker and stronger wool and can be stabilized with stitchery.  Eventually the repaired flag will be hand-stitched throughout onto a fabric covered stretcher and framed for display.  Before and after photographs show how the treatment has improved the appearance of the flag.
“The flag will be on display in the T.T. Wentworth, Jr. Florida State Museum beginning in April for the Sesquicentennial celebration of the Civil War,” said Richard Brosnaham, executive director. “ A reception for all donors will take place at that time to thank them for their investment in this tangible part of our heritage.”
Fundraising efforts to save this unique, irreplaceable piece of local history have been extended.  Donations continue to arrive, but much more is needed.
