Winners & Losers 6/30/11

The IN political hack, muckracker and yellow journalist alumni association met and voted on the biggest winners of the first 12 years of the Independent News. In true Winners & Losers style, all votes were submitted on beer coasters and takeout menus.

QUINT STUDER National leader in healthcare, bestselling author, baseball team owner and the man who stood up to the barbs and attacks of those wanting Pensacola to stay in the 1970s.

LUMON MAY For over 20 years, he has coached inner-city kids and produced college, NFL and NBA stars. Prior to the Hayward campaign, he ran the most diverse and inclusive political campaign in Pensacola history.

JUDY BENSE She made archaeology cool and has reconnected Pensacola to its rich history. As president of the University of West Florida, she has set the university on an exciting new course.

DON GAETZ He was the first non-educator elected as Okaloosa County Superintendent of Schools, which launched his political career. Today he is one of the most powerful men in the Florida Senate.

CRYSTAL SPENCER In the last decade, both county charter and consolidation efforts failed. How she chaired the Pensacola Charter Review Commission made a huge difference in that measure passing.

BUZZ EDDY He has been the City Manager of Gulf Breeze since 1992, outlasting all his peers in Santa Rosa and Escambia counties. The council membership has changed, but his leadership and ability to build consensus has made the difference.
